Environmental Training and Awareness

The competence of the workforce of any organisation is elementary for the successful management of environmental issues. A good environmental training programme consists of more than general environmental awareness training for all personnel. It should be based on a comprehensive training needs analysis or training needs assessment of the various positions within an organisation. Organisations can use a range of methods for the further development of their employees regarding their environmental tasks, ranging from environmental briefings to environmental training courses.

We have developed a range of environmental training courses that can be delivered at our clients premises. In addition to these environmental training courses, which also can be tailored to our clients needs, we have the expertise to develop and deliver bespoke environmental training courses for our clients.

The environmental management standard ISO 14001 includes a number of requirements relating to environmental awareness, training and competence of all employees. At a basic level an organisation must ensure that all employees and contractors are aware of:

In addition the organisation needs to ensure that staff that can cause a significant environmental impact are competent based on education, training or experience.

Environmental Training Needs Analysis

An effective and efficient environmental training programme is based on a thorough environmental training needs analysis. This training needs analysis should also address the environmental impacts that may be caused by contractors.

Typically, a variety of environmental training needs will be identified. Operational staff may need to be aware of specific procedures, while members of a design team would require knowledge of a range of alternative materials and techniques as well as new developments. There are usually also a number of specific roles associated with the maintenance of the environmental management system, such as auditors and the environmental management representative.

Environmental Training Programme

Based on the results of the environmental training needs analysis a comprehensive environmental training programme can be developed. The implementation of this programme should take account of the significance of environmental impacts as well as available resources.

There are numerous ways to deliver the training programme. Often a general environmental awareness briefing is provided to all employees. In addition for role such as the auditors, standard training courses with certification exist. Other possibilities include the development of environmental training courses for specific groups of employees, such as project managers or supply chain managers. Finally, contractors can be reached through, for instance, a dedicated supplier support programme.
